The Harper Advisory Group moved to Columbia, Maryland in 1973, becoming one of the first local accounting and tax firms. Our founder, Liz Harper, was featured in articles published in the Columbia Flyer and Howard County Times. She was an exception to an otherwise male dominated world of business owners.

With a lifelong interest in the impact of dynamic tax reduction, Liz Harper brought a new focus to small business accounting. The point was not just the accounting books; the ultimate focus was on expanding benefits while reducing taxes. From concept and incorporation to custom designed benefit packages, the Harper Advisory Group offered national small businesses a turnkey approach to business development and expansion.

Initially specializing in the home building industry and the performing arts, along with a rewarding individual tax practice, the Harper Advisory Group provided a full service accounting and consulting resource to small businesses located in Maryland, D.C., Northern Virginia, New York and Pennsylvania.

In 1979, we expanded our areas of expertise to include the Healthcare industry and Government Contracting.

Now, over 38 years later, we are proud to count over 188 small businesses as clients and over 733 individuals as tax clients.

In 1996, Harper Advisory Group became a government contractor on the IRS Partnership Form 1065 electronic filing test book. When the other contractors were unable to make their parts of the project functional, IRS called upon Harper to audit and review that work and fix the problems.

In a meeting with the IRS project manager and the head of business forms e-filing, Liz Harper was personally lauded for her work on the project. The IRS represenatives stated that they had never seen work of the quality and presentation that Harper produced.

In 2006, Yu Duan joined Harper Advisory Group. Yu is a tax accountant. In addition to bringing us her culture heritage, Yu is able to work with our Chinese clients in their native language. Currently she is Quality Control Manager and Senior Auditor in our tax department.

In addition to our individual tax practice, we are proud to have businesses, professional practices and non-profit clients in 12 states and one foreign country. They join our individual tax family who are located in 18 states and 3 foreign countries.

Most accountants process a client's work and then report the resulting tax liabilities. We work with our clients during, and at the end of the year, to maximize profit and minimize taxes. We are as busy in December as we are in April.

Taxation is a lifetime learning experience with almost daily changes in new laws and rulings.

If your tax preparer is not licensed as an "Enrolled Agent" by the IRS, you are settling for less than you need and possibly assuming an unknown liability at the same time.
